چکیده
background: ticks are obligate blood feeders that parasitize a wide variety of animals. hyalomma aegyptium, parasitize tortoises and other small wild life and livestock. this study was carried out to determine spur-thighed tortoise (testudo graeca) infestation to h. ageyptium in urmia region west azerbaijan of iran. methods: the study was carried out over a 16 month period from the spring of 2004 to the fall of 2005. a total of 32 tor toises were sampled. results: the results indicated that 14 tortoises infected with ticks. a total of 117 ticks were collected from infested animals, the minimum and maximum tick infestation was 1-60. ticks were attached to the axilla of fore and hind legs of tortoises. all ticks were determined to be h. aegyptium. conclusion: h. aegyptium was the most common tick species in the study area. due to tendency of some people to keeping tortoise as pet animal, more attention must be done to tortoise’s tick infestation. due to existence of h. aegyptium on tor toises in this region more study will need to evaluate presence of this tick on other animal species and its role on transmis sion of diseases.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detecting herpesvirus exposure in Mediterranean tortoises (spur-thighed tortoise [Testudo graeca] and Hermann's tortoise [Testudo hermanni]).
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection of antibodies to a herpesvirus associated with an upper respiratory tract disease in Mediterranean tortoises [spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) and Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni)]. This serodiagnostic test was validated through a hyperimmunization study. The mean of the A(405) readings of the plasma samples...
متن کاملIs the imperilled spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) native in Sardinia? Implications from population genetics and for conservation
Using mtDNA sequences and 12 microsatellite loci, we compare populations of Testudo graeca from Sardinia and North Africa. The observed pattern of almost no differentiation combined with reduced variation in the Sardinian population is consistent with introduction in prehistoric or historic times from what is now Tunisia and neighbouring Algeria. Furthermore, in the light of the recently publis...

متن کاملDoes testosterone influence activity budget in the male Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca graeca)?
The stimulatory effect of testosterone on male sexual activity is one of the clearest examples linking hormones and behaviors. However, this relationship is complex in Chelonians. We experimentally studied the influence of testosterone levels on the activity budget and space use in male Greek tortoises (Testudo graeca graeca) during the spring mating season. We first described the annual patter...

متن کاملDifferences in helminth infections between captive and wild spur-thighed tortoises Testudo graeca in southern Spain: a potential risk of reintroductions of this species.
Although the spur-thighed tortoise, Testudo graeca, is one of the most widely distributed species of tortoises, its natural populations are threatened through its whole range. Particularly at south-eastern Spain, the species is mainly threatened by habitat destruction and over-collection, given that this chelonian has been traditionally considered an appreciate pet. As south-eastern Spanish wil...
